If not winter book6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() I also appreciated Carson’s commentary on 16, 55, 94, and 98. Her insights on poem 137’s use of the extremely loaded term aidos (shame), and poem 142’s use of the term hetairai (friend) to connote an intimate relationship with a woman, each deepen the meaning of the poem. Through this translation, Anne Carson attempts to convey the best of her work, through both presentation-sometimes the spacing makes the poem, as with verse 26-and wording, as she discusses in her final notes of the book.įor me, half the appeal of this edition was the work put into translation notes by Carson. Believed to have written 8 or 9 books, her lover Megara, daughter Kleis, and enemy Andromeda all appear within these texts. Sappho (c.630-c.570BCE), one of Ancient Greece’s Nine Lyric Poets, is an absolutely gorgeous poet and writer, one who’s been the subject of much academic discourse. ![]() Yet if you had a desire for good or beautiful thingsĪnd your tongue were not concocting some evil to sayīut rather you would speak about what is just ![]()

Asexualities by Karli June Cerankowski6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Asexualities provides a critical reevaluation of even the most radical queer theorizations of sexuality. Together, these essays challenge the ways in which we imagine gender and sexuality in relation to desire and sexual practice. In this multidisciplinary volume, the authors expand this definition of asexuality to account for the complexities of gender, race, disability, and medical discourse. Asexuality is predominantly understood as an orientation describing people who do not experience sexual attraction. ![]() What is so radical about not having sex? To answer this question, this collection of essays explores the feminist and queer politics of asexuality. ![]()

The lord jim6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() The film is made up of three distinct segments: 1. Jim, of course, we are told by the narrator (Jack Hawkins' Marlowe) was philosophical, dreamed of heroism, and was a gentleman. Here, in "Lord Jim," the lines are often spoken by the dregs of society. What Brooks does not realize is that lines like "it only takes a split second to make a coward a hero or turn a hero into a coward" and "every sinner wants a second chance at redemption, without realizing he is damned for ever" are philosophical lines that one expects to hear from very literate individuals. Coppola was to use the related original material (Conrad's) in his "Apocalypse Now" for the Brando scenes several decades after this film was made and mostly forgotten. He knew the merits of a strong script with philosophical lines from Conrad. The subject of the film must have attracted director Richard Brooks who was essentially a screenplay writer who later became a director. I have seen the film three times over the past thirty years and each time I loved it. ![]()

Without precedent by joel richard paul6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As a diplomat and secretary of state, he defended American sovereignty against France and Britain, counseled President John Adams, and supervised the construction of the city of Washington. As the leading Federalist in Virginia, he rivaled his cousin Thomas Jefferson in influence. As Chief Justice of the United States-the longest-serving in history-he established the independence of the judiciary and the supremacy of the federal Constitution and courts. From the nation's founding in 1776 and for the next forty years, Marshall was at the center of every political battle. No member of America's Founding Generation had a greater impact on the Constitution and the Supreme Court than John Marshall, and no one did more to preserve the delicate unity of the fledgling United States. From the author of Unlikely Allies and Indivisible comes the remarkable story of John Marshall who, as chief justice, statesman, and diplomat, played a pivotal role in the founding of the United States. ![]()

2 states by chetan bhagat6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() 2 States is the story of Bhagat’s marriage, fictionalized as the marriage of Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) and Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt), who meet a much more rapturous IIM Ahmedabad than we know of. ![]() But the rendition is inconsistent, ranging from clumsy to clinical. ![]() At some point in its promotional campaign, I could feel that it did not matter anymore if the film was good or not?ĭebutante director Abhishek Varman has adapted Bhagat’s story into a screenplay, along with Hussain Dalal (dialogues). Past few weeks, the buzz about the film has increased transcendentally and the film seems ready for a huge weekend. The song promos were released right after and the music overcame the initial setback with much vim. The first promo of the film 2 States was snazzy but thanda. It is no jaw dropping surprise then that they are made into movies. Nevertheless, Bhagat does write engaging tales, rather simplistically, and they are able to engage a wide range of readers across the nation. As a novel, 2 States could be one of his better works, though I am not sure if it would still be any ruminating literature. Yes, he has written his two latest books, 2 States and Revolution 2020 for the same purpose. Indian author Chetan Bhagat now writes books so that they can be converted into films. ![]()

Stars above book by marissa meyer6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() Wolf wrapped his arms around Scarlet’s waist, lifting her off the floor, and kissed her before Kai could finish. “By the power given to me by the people of Earth, under the laws of the Earthen Union and as witnessed by those gathered here today, I do now pronounce you husband and wife.” He spread his hands in invitation.
