The Gallows Pole by Benjamin Myers6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In The Gallows Pole, Myers turns his attention to West Yorkshire and relates the story of David Hartley and the Cragg Vale Coiners, their successes, their daring, their savagery, and their ultimate downfall at the hands of a persistent excise officer and a turncoat. Taken together, his work, which focuses on "rural landscapes, mythology, marginalised characters, morality, class, nature, dialect and post-industrialisation," forms a sequence dedicated to the beauty and the brutality of the counties of northern England. When The Gallows Pole won the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction in 2018, it catapulted Benjamin Myers into the mainstream literary spotlight, but before that his innovative use of language and his almost uncanny ability to capture a sense of place had ensured that his novels (including Pig Iron and Beastings ) were underground sensations. ![]()

![]() ![]() Anthropomorphism is an unforgivable, career-endangering sin. It wants to assert a belief about the specialness of humans that is very akin to the theological belief of the monotheisms that it loudly despises. But try to say that we share with nonhumans the building blocks of our behavior and our cognition, as we share the building blocks of our biochemistry, and the biological establishment starts to get uneasy. We are happy to accept that we got our bowels and our muscle metabolism from our nonhuman ancestors and even that the depolarizations in our brain neurons that let us love Shakespeare are caused by the same ion tides, surging through sodium and potassium gates, that let a rat home in on a piece of stale cheese. These conclusions are supposed to be accepted by all educated people as unimpeachable scientific orthodoxy. Darwin told us, over 150 years ago, that we came from the natural world that in our family albums there are, not many pages back, furred and feathered and scaly faces that we are in unbroken continuity with nonhumans. ![]()

Withering hope layla hagen read online6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() The week after I turned eighteen they went to one such country that was on the brink of a revolution. They believed they could make a difference. Wanting to bring hope to places where there was no hope. ![]() Wherever the danger was greater, there they were, both of them. ![]() "Before long, they also got involved in the politics of countries that were… politically unstable. I rarely saw them." Warmth feathers me on the inside, as I remember checking the mailbox, and later my email, waiting to hear from my heroes-to learn when they'd be home to spend time with me and tell me about their latest achievements. They were my heroes when I was little and into my teenage years, even though they were gone for long periods at a time. They'd often fly to underprivileged countries to give out food and medicine, and oversee infrastructural projects. This meant more than donations or charity parties. "My parents dedicated their life to charitable causes. "Umm…" I pick a spot on the airstairs and gawk at it, fiddling with my hands in my lap. "Do you know how my parents died?" I ask. But that didn't keep people-my closest friends, even Chris-from judging my choice. They just assumed that the traumatic event had something to do with my decision. After my parents' death, it was sort of implied why I changed my mind. No one asked me why I decided to change my career, though everyone knew I was dreaming of being a human rights lawyer. I sigh, sitting on the airstairs, one step beneath him. ![]()
